Ghana is making significant strides in cybersecurity, and Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful is thrilled about the progress. At the 2024 Cybersecurity Awards Night, she praised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for empowering the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) to fulfill its mandate, thanking him for his unwavering support and commitment .

Ghana’s cybersecurity milestones are impressive, including establishing the National Cybersecurity Secretariat in 2017, transitioning to the National Cyber Security Centre in 2018, and transforming into the CSA in 2021. These achievements have earned Ghana recognition from the International Telecommunications Union’s Global Cybersecurity Index and the Cybersecurity Maturity Model.

The revised National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy focuses on enhancing cybersecurity infrastructure, prompt incident response, safeguarding vital digital assets, and fostering innovation and development. Minister Owusu-Ekuful emphasized the importance of shared responsibility in cybersecurity, acknowledging contributions from individuals and organizations across the ecosystem ¹. She also recognized local and international partners, including the African Union Commission, ECOWAS, UNICEF, and the United States’ Security Governance Initiative.

Ghana’s progress is particularly significant amidst the growing threat of disinformation. To combat this, the country launched its National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2024 under the theme “Combating Misinformation/Disinformation in a Digital Resilient Democracy – Our Collective Responsibility”. This initiative aims to promote awareness and build capacities to detect, prevent, and mitigate the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

Minister Owusu-Ekuful has been driving Ghana’s digital transformation agenda, with initiatives like the Ghana Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Project, which has connected approximately 700,000 previously underserved and unserved Ghanaians in remote communities. Ghana has also taken bold steps to implement the ECOWAS Free Roaming initiative, promoting greater integration among member states and decreasing roaming charges within the sub-region.
