The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has declared a nationwide strike, effective Thursday, November 7, 2024. This decision comes after the government failed to meet the October 31 deadline to finalize a new salary structure for civil service and local government staff, which was supposed to take effect on January 1, 2025.
CLOGSAG had previously notified the government of its intention to strike in a letter dated October 22, 2024. However, with no resolution in sight, the association has decided to take drastic measures. CLOGSAG has also severed ties with Benjamin Authur, Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salary Commission, citing bad faith in negotiations.
This is not the first time CLOGSAG has gone on strike over salary issues. Earlier this year, the association declared a nationwide strike on July 3, 2024, due to the non-implementation of the new salary structure.
CLOGSAG members are instructed to stay home starting November 7, until further notice. The strike is expected to impact various government services across the country.
The association’s decision underscores the growing frustration among civil servants and local government employees regarding their compensation and working conditions. With the strike looming, Ghana’s government faces mounting pressure to resolve the salary structure issue and prevent further disruptions to public services.
