Their story began in 1996 when a young Mawusi had just completed her ‘A’ Levels in Ghana. As an aspiring singer, she was introduced to Mark by his sister, Patient, to sing backup on Mark’s first album, ‘Akos.’ The moment Mark set his eyes on the teenaged Mawusi, he knew she was the one. However, life took them on different paths, and they went their separate ways to start their own families. Despite the distance, they remained friends for over 20 years, consoling each other through their failed relationships.

In 2023, providence brought them back together. Mark invited Mawusi to visit him in London, and from the moment he received her at the airport with a big bouquet of flowers and the warmest hug, sparks began to fly. After many hours of catching up, Mark asked Mawusi to marry him, and she said “yes.” From that moment on, they became inseparable love birds again.

Realizing their lives were meant to be one; they decided to proclaim their love for each other in a traditional wedding ceremony witnessed by friends and family. The traditional engagement was adorned with authentic Ghanaian décor, featuring vibrant drums and other cultural artifacts, creating an immersive and festive atmosphere. For many West Africans, especially Ghanaians, a “traditional engagement” is essentially a traditional wedding ceremony. Before the advent of Christianity, the engagement party sealed the deal between a man and a woman, pronouncing them husband and wife.

The ceremony was a joyous, lively occasion as Chiefs, Elders, and members of the Ghanaian community gathered in large numbers to support the bride’s family. A significant delegation from the groom’s family was also present to support their son. As the two families sat across from each other, engaging in lively “boisterous negotiations,” the atmosphere was filled with anticipation and excitement.

One of the day’s highlights was when the bride’s family paraded a young woman before the groom and asked if she was his bride. Knowing his “flower” too well, the groom confidently responded with an emphatic no, much to the amusement and delight of everyone present. Finally, his patience was rewarded as his gorgeous bride was gallantly escorted to him. The family spokesperson, or ‘Tsiami’ in the Ewe language, asked the groom, “Is this the beautiful flower you said you saw in our garden?” Overcome with emotion, the groom joyfully exclaimed, “Yes,” stirring the gathering into shouts of support and laughter.

The beauty of the Ghanaian traditional marriage was on full display, with its raw and embellished rituals captivating all who attended. The simplicity of the tradition, where a man finds his wife, presents schnapps and requested items and marries her, was truly admirable.
