Professor Baffour Agyemang-Duah, former UN Governance Advisor, has voiced concerns over Ghana’s leaders focusing on Speaker Alban Bagbin’s ruling, neglecting critical national issues. In a Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s Focus Show interview, Prof. Duah addressed the “Constitutional Standoff in Parliament,” emphasizing the need for government arms collaboration to resolve conflicts.

Prof. Duah warned that prolonged emphasis on legalities distracts from pressing concerns. “My fear is we’re wasting time and energy on these legalities while important issues await attention,” he stated.

Ghana faces challenges requiring prompt action, including environmental degradation, economic growth and social development. Prof. Duah advocated for inter-arm cooperation, respecting separation of powers. “Independence isn’t absolute; checks and balances are crucial,” he clarified.

The parliamentary standoff revolves around Speaker Bagbin’s ruling and Supreme Court interventions, complicated by rival majority claims. This impasse delays decision-making, hindering economic progress, environmental protection and social development.

Prof. Duah’s concerns echo growing public frustration. Ghana’s leaders must refocus on national priorities, ensuring effective governance and prosperity.
