The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has thrown its weight behind the Trades Union Congress’s (TUC) call for a nationwide strike to compel the government to declare a state of emergency over the galamsey crisis.

In a statement, PPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, described galamsey as Ghana’s “single most existential threat” and accused galamseyers of engaging in “biological warfare” against the state. He pledged to sign the Anti-Galamsey Declaration sponsored by the TUC without hesitation.

The PPP supports the TUC’s demands for a ban on all forms of illegal small-scale mining in water bodies, forest reserves, and other areas. Asamoah-Siaw praised organized labor for standing against “state-capture and state-sponsored terrorism” led by “selfish, greedy, and unpatriotic Ghanaians.”

The PPP’s 10-Point Agenda, which includes free education and job creation for youth, aims to provide alternative opportunities and curb the supply of labor to galamsey operations.

Asamoah-Siaw urged organized labor to disregard President Akufo-Addo’s calls for more time to address the issue, citing his nearly eight years in power without resolving the crisis. The PPP seeks to govern with integrity and discipline, promoting peace and prosperity for all Ghanaians.

The strike and call for a state of emergency come as Ghana grapples with the devastating environmental and social impacts of galamsey. The PPP’s stance adds pressure on the government to take decisive action against this pervasive problem.
