In a historic move, the African Union’s (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) has placed the protection of African journalists at the top of its agenda for the first time. This landmark decision, made on September 2, 2024, marks a significant shift in the AU’s commitment to press freedom and journalist safety.

Chaired by Ambassador Churchill Ewumbue-Monono, the PSC’s 1230th meeting addressed the pressing issues of journalist protection and access to information in conflict situations across Africa. The Council recognized the critical role journalists play in promoting democracy, freedom of speech, and political accountability.

Key Resolutions:

  • Protection and Safety: The PSC encouraged member states to develop national and regional strategies to safeguard journalists and media facilities, aligning with AU guidelines and principles.
  • Working Group: The Council suggested forming a Working Group on the Protection of Journalists to improve cooperation and ensure a safe environment for media workers.
  • Combating Misinformation: The PSC expressed concern over misinformation and disinformation, emphasizing the need to enhance efforts to combat false information through media and other platforms.

Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) President Omar Faruk Osman hailed the decision as “a beacon of hope” for African journalists, while International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) General Secretary Anthony Bellanger described it as “a game-changer for press freedom”.

The AU’s proactive stance demonstrates its commitment to protecting journalists and reinforcing democracy, freedom of expression, and access to information across the continent. As the AU moves from policy to action, the IFJ and FAJ will work closely with the African Union Commission, PSC, and other stakeholders to ensure a safer environment for journalists.

This historic decision marks a crucial step towards a safer, more free, and informed Africa.
