STOPGALAMSEY- Ghana’s Parliament Set to Convene Fifth Meeting of Fourth Session October 15

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has officially announced the commencement of the fifth meeting of the fourth session of the eighth parliament of the fourth republic of Ghana. This gathering is scheduled to take place at the Accra International Conference Centre on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.

According to the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, the Speaker has the power to summon a new session of parliament ¹. Typically, a session of parliament consists of three meetings: January to March, May to July, and October to December. This fifth meeting marks a significant event in the parliamentary calendar.

The eighth parliament of the fourth republic of Ghana is composed of 275 members from single-member constituencies, with the executive president appointing ministers, majority of whom must come from parliament. Parliament operates similarly to the Westminster model, allowing for ministers to be questioned, members to make statements on matters of public importance, and introduction of motions on critical issues.

As the country prepares for the upcoming elections, this parliamentary meeting is expected to address key national issues. The Ghanaian parliament plays a crucial role in shaping the country’s policies and approving government agreements.
