Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Police Service has obtained a court order to stop Democracy Hub from holding a protest at Revolution Square in front of the Jubilee House from September 21-23, 2024. The police had assessed the location and deemed it unsuitable due to potential risks to public order, defense, safety, and health.
The BBC police engaged with the organizers, requesting an alternative location, but they refused. The High Court granted the order to prohibit the demonstration at Revolution Square on September 18, 2024.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the police are willing to provide security for the protest but disagree with the chosen location. The organizers are still free to protest at an agreed-upon alternative location.
The protest, initially planned by Democracy Hub, aimed to address issues such as bad governance, corruption, and economic difficulties facing Ghanaians. The event was expected to draw hundreds of participants ¹.
The police have assured the public of sufficient security measures and look forward to agreeing on a new location to enable the organizers to exercise their democratic right to protest.
