Accra, Ghana – President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms in Ghana’s legal education system, going beyond physical infrastructure. He acknowledged the urgency for reforms while addressing an international conference on the future of legal education in Ghana and Africa at the University of Ghana School of Law.
The President stressed that the reforms should prioritize quality and standards, ensuring that the General Legal Council maintains its responsibility for upholding standards. He also highlighted the importance of sustainability in the new system.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin assured Parliament’s commitment to establishing an efficient legal framework for legal education. He revealed that efforts are underway to introduce the Legal Professions Act to reform the existing legal regime and regulate the practice of legal professions in Ghana.
Bagbin emphasized Parliament’s dedication to scrutinizing and debating the Bill thoroughly to promote standards and professional legal training. A Private Member’s Bill is also currently before the House to augment the Legal Professions Act, and the Speaker pledged to ensure both Bills receive full attention.
