Accra, Ghana – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to stage nationwide demonstrations on September 17, 2024, to protest the Electoral Commission’s (EC) handling of discrepancies in the voter register. The party’s grievances emerged during the recent voter exhibition exercise, where they identified several irregularities in the register.
Despite meeting with the EC to address these concerns, the NDC’s request for a forensic audit of the register was denied. In response, the party has decided to take to the streets to demand action. NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah announced the plans after submitting presidential nomination forms on behalf of John Mahama.
On September 17, protesters will march to regional EC offices in all 16 regional capitals, while national executives will present a formal petition at the EC’s headquarters in Accra. Asiedu Nketiah emphasized the need for the EC to guarantee a peaceful, free, and fair election, stating, “We think that they should conduct themselves in a manner that will guarantee peaceful, free and fair election.”
The NDC’s move is seen as a significant escalation of their concerns over the voter register, and the protests are expected to draw widespread attention to the issue. With the December 7 elections looming, the EC’s response to the NDC’s demands will be closely watched.
