Accra, Ghana – Stakeholders in the energy sector are advocating for the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) revenue collection unit to improve efficiency and ensure timely distribution of funds under the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM).

During a roundtable discussion on building an effective gas sector revenue management system, sector players expressed concerns about ECG’s struggles to collect sufficient revenue. This shortfall is negatively impacting the sector’s operations and placing undue pressure on the government for subsidies.

The stakeholders argue that privatizing the revenue collection unit would bring in much-needed expertise and resources to enhance collection efficiency, reduce losses, and ensure that funds are distributed promptly to stakeholders under the CWM.

The move is seen as crucial to addressing the sector’s financial challenges and reducing the burden on the government. With a more efficient revenue collection system in place, the energy sector can operate on a more sustainable footing, and the government can focus on other pressing priorities.

The call for privatization comes as the energy sector continues to face significant financial challenges, including revenue shortfalls and delayed payments. The stakeholders believe that private sector participation can help turn things around and create a more robust and efficient revenue management system.
