The Minority in Parliament has declared its firm support for the upcoming “Hands Off Our Hotels” demonstration, scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, 2024, in Accra. The protest aims to express public disapproval of the government’s plan to sell four profitable hotels managed by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.
In a statement released on Monday, June 17, 2024, the Minority condemned the sale as a “sweetheart deal” that exemplifies cronyism, corruption, and state capture under the current government. They argued that transferring these iconic state-owned hotels to a cabinet minister is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about the government’s commitment to public interest versus private gain.
The statement, signed by Minority Chief Whip Governs Kwame Abgodza, criticized the Akufo-Addo/Bawumiaadministration for prioritizing personal enrichment over national welfare. It called on the public to join the demonstration to send a strong message against the sale and similar questionable deals.
“This move to sell profitable state-owned hotels to Bryan Acheampong is wrong and must not be condoned,” the statement read. “We urge the public to participate in Tuesday’s demonstration to show the government that Ghanaians will not tolerate such actions. Enough is enough!”
