Chicago Illinois , September 11 2016: The immediate past President of the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago (GNC), Mr. John Henry Assabill, has filed a lawsuit against the GNC. The lawsuit alleges that the GNC has failed to honor its promise to reimburse Mr. John Henry Assabill monies he loaned to the council to organize Ghanafest 2012 and 2013. This was announced by Mr. Ebenezer Antwi Nsiah at the GNC general meeting today. It must be recalled that Mr. John Henry Assabill was the President of the GNC from 2008 to 2013.
The summons was served on Mr. Ebenezer Antwi-Nsiah at his residence on Thursday September 8, 2016. Mr Nsiah is serving as the registered agent of the Ghana National Council.
Mr. John Henry Assabill alleges that part of a loan he obtained on behalf of the GNC for Ghanafest 2012 had accrued interest up to $30,304.00. Mr. John Henry Assabil again alleged in the lawsuit that he loaned another $4000.00 to the GNC in 2013.The total debt at the time of filing the lawsuit was $43,304.00.
John Henry Assabill did not hand over any of the GNC’s accounts to Mr. Ebenezer Antwi Nsiah! All the GNC accounts were frozen by John Henry Assabill when he left office. The current administration led by Nsiah therefore took office with zero balance and was not in the position to immediately pay any debt accrued within the six-year term of John Henry Assabill.
According to hand over notes submitted by John Henry Assabill’s administration during the transition stated that the GNC had already paid $10,000.00 of the $20,000.00 loan and there was an additional $4,000.00 that the GNC owed John Henry Assabill, bringing the GNC’s total indebtedness to $14,000.00. The hand over financials also showed balances of $5,000.00 in the GNC PNC Bank CD account with interest accrued of $78.00 and a checking account balance of $605.11 all with the PNC bank. A check with the bank revealed that the GNC accounts had been closed by John Henry Assabill and the monies cashed.
Some members of the GNC we spoke with alleges that though they were aware of the $20,000.00 loan for Ghanafest 2012, they were not informed of the huge interest rate associated with the loan. We are not certain in this situation, but normally the GNC members would vote to approve or disapprove such a loan with existential threat to the GNC.
We will give you the background and outcomes of previous lawsuits in the community and also notify our readers of further developments in the current lawsuit! We however hope that the GNC and John Henry Assabill would find ways to resolve this matter amicably. Stay tuned.
