Ghana’s Judoka Szogedi eliminated

Ghana’s first ever female judoka, Szandra Szogedi, failed to advance from the round of 32 after her Brazilian opponent Mariana Silva eliminated her on Tuesday with 100 points.

The 27-year-old first competed for Ghana some five years ago and took to the judo mat in the 63kg category in Rio.

Szogedi’s qualification was confirmed at an event in Kazakhstan in May and her impending appearance in Rio is a long way from her childhood in Hungary’s capital, Budapest, aspiring to be an international gymnast.

She becomes the second athlete in team Ghana’s camp to fail to qualify after swimmer Kaya Forson was eliminated on Monday.
