Study: Lack of sleep may result in lower sperm count in men

Not getting enough sleep may harm men’s sperm.

Danish researchers found men who slept poorly had lower sperm counts and  fewer sperm that formed correctly.

They used data from more  than 900 men in their early 20’s. Participants were asked how well they slept in  the previous month, had blood tests and their semen analyzed.

The men who reported sleeping poorly had fewer sperm and the sperm they had  were not as healthy as the sperm of men who slept well.

While investigators found a link between poor sleep and poor sperm quality,  the study did not prove poor sleep creates lower quality sperm.

The team suggests future studies should look at whether improving sleep may  improve sperm quality.

The findings appear in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
