NDC primaries: Disqualify Saaka in Salaga South race over SADA scandal

Some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Salaga South constituency have petitioned executives of the party to disqualify Dan Saaka Ahmed from contesting the parliamentary primaries.

In a petition to the chairman of the vetting committee, the group said: “It is a well-established fact here in Salaga and even beyond that Mr. Dan Saaka is deeply involved in the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) scandal, allegedly misappropriating almost GHC2.7m meant for butter nut squash cultivation.

“According to the audit report (page 16) that Joy FM has published over a year and half ago, Plus One Investment Limited was paid GHC2,771,890 by SADA management for the purposes of cultivation and exportation of butternut squash but the company has failed to deliver on its mandate to the people of the Northern Region. The project died at birth because the money was allegedly misappropriated wantonly. As we write this petition, the project site at Yapei in the Northern Region has been abandoned and almost all the workers who worked at the initial stages of the project were not paid after working for almost six months. These workers include people from the East Gonja District and we had testimonies from many of them.”

“We are well aware that Mr Dan Saaka used one Sadat Alhassan, a native of Salaga as a front for the project and appointed him as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company just before the payment of the money by SADA. Sadat Alhassan is a young man in his twenties with no experience in any field whatsoever having completed his university degree program just about a year before the money was paid to the Plus One Company. We are aware that after receiving the money allegedly in the Plus One account, he transferred it into the personal account of Mr. Dan Saaka Ahmed,” it added.

NDC PARLIAMENTARY VETTING COMMITTEE

GHANA

PETITION ON SALAGA SOUTH NDC PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE
We the under listed members and branch executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Salaga South Constituency, by this petition would like to bring to the attention of the vetting committee of our dear party the need to thoroughly investigate and if necessary disqualify Mr. Dan Saaka Ahmed (Alhaji Danjumah) from contesting the forthcoming parliamentary primaries of the party at the constituency.

It is a well-established fact here in Salaga and even beyond that Mr. Dan Saaka is deeply involved in the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) scandal, allegedly misappropriating almost GHC2.7m meant for butter nut squash cultivation.

According to the audit report (page 16) that Joy FM has published over a year and half ago, Plus One Investment Limited was paid GHC2,771,890 by SADA management for the purposes of cultivation and exportation of butternut squash but the company has failed to deliver on its mandate to the people of the Northern Region. The project died at birth because the money was allegedly misappropriated wantonly. As we write this petition, the project site at Yapei in the Northern Region has been abandoned and almost all the workers who worked at the initial stages of the project were not paid after working for almost six months. These workers include people from the East Gonja District and we had testimonies from many of them.

We are well aware that Mr Dan Saaka used one Sadat Alhassan, a native of Salaga as a front for the project and appointed him as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company just before the payment of the money by SADA. Sadat Alhassan is a young man in his twenties with no experience in any field whatsoever having completed his university degree program just about a year before the money was paid to the Plus One Company. We are aware that after receiving the money allegedly in the Plus One account, he transferred it into the personal account of Mr. Dan Saaka Ahmed.

At the time the money was paid in the late 2012 and early 2013 Sadat Alhassan was an unemployed graduate roaming the streets of Accra, Tamale and Salaga and we wonder how he could manage these huge sums of money. Mr. Dan Saaka as programs coordinator of Plust One allegedly stayed behind the scenes and misappropriated the funds meant for the butter nut project.

Mr Dan Saaka had a training while at the Export Development and Agricultural Investment Fund (EDAIF) on the cultivation of butter nut squash. However EDAIF had to terminate his appointment on similar charges of wanton misapplication of project funds while working on various projects.

By this petition we are appealing to the party’s vetting committee to thoroughly investigate the matter and if necessary disqualify Mr Dan Saaka from contesting the Salaga South seat so as to prevent any future disgrace and embarrassment on the people of the constituency and the party at both the constituency and the national levels.

Disqualifying him from contesting this election would also prevent him from using our party as a shield against future prosecution by the state.

It is alarming that somebody who wants to become the Honorable Member of Parliament (MP) for Salaga South could take advantage of naivety of a young man from the same constituency. However, it is clear that in the event of future prosecution by the state on this collapsed butter nut project, any rational person would expect the parents or family of Sadat Alhassan in Salaga to do everything to direct the liability and responsibility of the scandal to where it belongs to and save their son who was just used and abandoned by Dan Saaka Ahmed. As we write this petition, we do know that Sadat Alhassan is walking the street of Accra unemployed and dejected while Mr. Saaka is wallowing in affluence.

We are also appealing to both President Mahama and former President Rawlings to intervene on this issue to ensure that the name and image of the Salaga South Constituency and the NDC in general is not brought into disrepute.

We have attached the audit report and some relevant publications on the matter for your further investigation and action.

Thank you.
