In hopes of replacing left-back summer departure Filipe Luis, Chelsea are set to sign Augsburg’s Ghanaian international defender Baba Rahman.
Chelsea are confident they’ll sign the 21-year-old left-back who was absent from Augsburg’s weekend friendly win over Toulouse, signalling a possible move to the defending Premier League champions, according to ESPNFC.
Blues manager Jose Mourinho was adamant following Luis’ return to Atletico Madrid that the club needed to add a defender before the Premier League season starts Aug. 8.
“We cannot go to the Premier League with five defenders,” Mourinho continued “That’s our weakness. The quality is good, but the numbers are not enough.”
Luis, who joined Chelsea last summer from Atletico Madrid, failed to make an impact, appearing in only 15 league and five Champions League matches for the Blues, motivating a return to La Liga. Lodged behind star left-back Cesar Azpilicueta on Chelsea’s depth chart, the Brazilian international was barely an accessory to the club’s double-winning successes.
Chelsea paid £15.8 million for a year of Luis’ services, only to sell him back to Altetico for a reported £11.1 million, incurring a loss of £4.7 million or £235,000 per appearance.
Good bit of business that, Mr. Mourinho.
In terms of the odds of Rahman joining Chelsea this summer, Augsburg are poised to sign a replacement for the man that has 11 senior Ghana caps.
Karlsruher SC sporting executive Jens Todt has confirmed left-back Philipp Max is set to join Augsburg as Rahman’s successor, opening the door for a transfer to Chelsea.
