The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, has summoned the Local Government Minister, Collins Dauda, over the demolition of the country’s biggest slum, Sodom and Gomorrah.
Parliament wants the minister to explain to the Law making House the rationale behind the demolition exercise that has displaced over 50,000 residents.
The demolition exercise led by Accra Mayor Alfred Oko Vanderpuije started Saturday, June 20.
The exercise comes after a heavy downpour on June 3 led to a fuel station explosion at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra killing over 150 people.
The affected residents on Monday hit the streets to protest against the demolition exercise vandalising property at the State House after they besieged the premises.
Twenty-six people have so far been arrested and are currently in Police custody.
After some MPs raised the issue on the floor of Parliament Tuesday, the Speaker of Parliament directed that the Local Government minister appear before the House to offer an explanation.
