January 4 2015, Chicago Illinois : Friends and family, Members of the church of the Ghanaian Community (GCC), Leaders and Members of the Ghanaian community here, defy the heavy snow fall and the bitter cold temperatures, massed at 5500 S. Woodlawn to honor one of the elders and leader in the Ghanaian community , Reverend Kwasi Amponsah Yebaoh. The event was also a Retirement and Farewell Service for the founding member, former Secretary, President and Pastor of the GCC. Reverend Kwasi Amponsah Yebaoh was a former representative of the Brong-Ahafo Association on the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago and one time it’s Moderator; a founding member and former President of the Brong-Ahafo Association of Chicago; a founding member and former chairman of the Council of Brong-Ahafo Associations of North America (COBAANA), a founding member, sponsor, fundraiser and former Player of the Sahara Soccer Club of Chicago.
Reminiscent of its formative years at the Rockefeller chapel where members of the Ghanaian community congregate in large numbers to celebrate and worship on special occasions, today’s audience at the Farewell and Retirement Service rival those old days; when the GCC was the only Ghanaian immigrant church in Chicago. Many members and leaders of the community spoke fondly of the works and leadership provided by Rev. Amponsah-Yebaoh to the community in Chicago and Ghanaians the diaspora.
” I will be gone but will be with you in spirit” Rev Amponsah-Yeboah told the audience in his last sermon to the congregation before he departs later in the week to Ghana for a well-earned retirement.
