COMMENTARY ON THE DEATH OF REFEREE KWAME KYEI-ANDOH

BY ALBERT PARKER ,NARTEH, A SPORTS JOURNALIST.
Last Andoh,  lost his life as a result of an
assault from football fans  after a controversial disputed decision in league
match at Bordie  in the Western region. This unruly attitude of some football
fans at our league centers must be a source worry to the Ghana Football
Association and stake holders of the game. If football is meant to entertain and
unite, then innocent people should not lose their lives for discharging their
duties for the game.

The death of the young referee, after discharging his
duties as a center referee in a division one league match between Gold Stars and
NaaJoe United, resulting in his death days later should be of  serious concern
to the G.F.A and the entire nation and must be condemned. Fans of Dompem Gold
Stars should bury their heads in shame for ending the life of an innocent young
man.  We seem to have forgotten so soon the tragedy that befell the nation  a
decade ago on May 9th,  which we are  yet to recover from. One can also say that
it is  this  unruly conduct of  fans of some prominent premier league clubs that
is attributed to the  low patronage of  our league matches .

Prominent clubs in the league such as  Hearts of Oak, Asante  Kotoko, Ebusua Dwarfs and others have
had to face suspension from  using their home grounds as a result of the
behavior of their fans. The G.F.A must also take some blame for allowing teams to
play in  centers without inner perimeters. It will not be out of place to
suggest that the F.A institutes tougher measures to discourage fans and clubs
from this unacceptable behavior. The most painful aspect of the plight is that
these referees who go through this ordeal are poorly paid. Football authorities
must be mindful of the fact that this kind of unruly behaviour of fans may
discourage potential sponsors from assisting clubs and the development  football
infrastructure generally.

Hooliganism must not be allowed to eclipse our
football. Whiles the whole world is waiting for the FIFA world cup to be stage
in Brazil, Fairness and right sense of judgment by referees on the field of play
will do the game a lot of good,  and discourage unruly individuals and groups of
supporters from lashing mayhem on our knights of the whistle. We say gone too
soon to young referee Kwame kyei-Andoh,Daminifa Due.
May Ghana football never again witness such unwanted , unnecessary and brutish
behavior from spectators.
