It’s been months in coming, but Ghana’s most awaited boxing bout will come off on April 25 in Accra. Bukom Banku (Braimah Kamoko) and Ayittey Powers have signed on with Box Office Promotions for a non-title bout.
The two signed the Ghc40,000 purse contract at the Accra Stadium on Thursday in a charged but decent atmosphere.
The traditional trash talk was intense.
Bukom Banku said; “Right now the fight is on and I have been promised many presents including a house and a car and I will make sure Ayitey Powers doesn’t go beyond the seventh round!”
He added that President Mahama had promised him a car.
For Powers, the bout will not go beyond six rounds: “I am the king of pound for pound boxing and I will make sure I teach Banku a lesson. I will knock him out. I won’t say much, but will make sure that I shut him up one and for all.”
This bout has been in the works for more than a year and steeped in the mutual hate between the two. Powers was accused of wanting unrealistic terms, usually speaking from his base in Australia.
“The bout has been hyped to the heavens, and it will not disappoint,” said Box Office Promotions’ Alex Ntiamoah.
Citi Sports understands that both boxers have agreed to a 12 round non-title bout, but talks are ongoing with some sanctioning bodies for a title.
The public imagination has already been captured for this fight if only you witness what could be a contest of comedy or great pugilism.
Ayittey Powers has an interesting record of 18 wins and 23 losses. But his form is poor, having lost his last six bouts.
Banku has 20 knockouts in a 26-0 undefeated boxing career.
